Week left to give to The Rotary Foundation!

There is only one week left for clubs and Rotarians to give to The Rotary Foundation. Out total District 7600 Rotary Foundation giving is lagging behind last year at this time according to Joy Kline’s “Joy” Report.

Is it enough that we just meet our goals?

Well, that may depend on the integrity of the goals set. Just remember that the amount of monies available for district grants in a given year depend upon the district’s annual fund giving amount three years prior. If ho hum goals have been set and met, then three years later there will be ho hum funds available for worthy district grant.

The same applies for global grants:

District giving three years prior also impacts funds for global grants. The only difference being that at least some unused funds in the World Fund can be rolled over from one Rotary year to the next.

So, make the final 2018-19 Joy Report, Joyful!

The Annual Report

Past District Governor Bill Pollard posted a link to the online Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation 2016-2017  this week on the Rotary D7600 Foundation Committee Facebook page.

A click brought us to this description of how The Rotary Foundation spent its funds. The numbers are amazing:

  • Polio Plus: $108 million
  • Global Grants: $73 million (net of returned funds and other adjustments)
  • District Grants: $26 million
  • Program Operations: $23 million
  • Fund Development: $9 million
  • General Administration: $5 million
  • Peace Centers: $5 million

With our giving in District 7600 we are part of the worldwide reach of The Rotary Foundation. What we donate in the 2017-18 year will be of benefit to others in future years.

There is also an incisive report on our efforts to prevent disease and on the status of Pollio Eradication.  Please take the time to take a peek at the Annual Report.

Economic & Community Development Grants

There are 6 Areas of Focus in the Rotary Foundation world … Economic & Community Development is one of them:

solar panels

IPTC Creator: Alyce Henson     IPTC Credit (c) Rotary International

We cruise Rotary Images on http://www.rotary.org from time to time.  When you pull up Rotary Images you can input a search term to pull up a cluster of photos meeting that search criterion.  This photo is one of the images which popped up when we searched “Economic and Community Development.  In the photo, Christopher Castro (center) of the Rotary Club of Brentwood, New York, is in Nan Sema on the island of LaGonave, Haiti.  He is helping to secure solar panels on the roof of a local clinic.  With Rotary Foundation Matching Grant 73919 Rotarians from District 7250 and Haitian Rotarians, staffed a week-long medical clinic, installed a laptop and satellite to be used to for telemedicine and converted the community center’s power source to solar energy. After the 2010 Haitian earthquake, Port Au Prince residents fled to the island, increasing the population by 30%, creating stress on the available services on this small island.

The thought came to mind that with the recent ravaging of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and other weather destroyed communities, such a similar grant effort might be considered.  The uses for such projects are so many … water pumping & purification, fire & ems (any first responder) services, schools, communications … so many possibilities.  Just planting a seed …

Local Economic & Community Development Grants

The first round of District 7600 grants have been awarded and round 2 grants are in the bin.  In the next issue of this blog, we’ll report on some of the District Grants which had the economic and community development identified their primary area of focus.  Helping communities overcome barriers to employment, transportation, health, education and other community enhancers is a worthy Rotary goal. It will be informative to learn what some of our local clubs are doing in this arena.

Don’t forget to register for the District Foundation Awards Banquet (November 9) on the dacdb.com calendar.  Enough said for now.

The March 25th Grant Management Seminar (GMS) provided 61 Rotarians from 37 clubs with three hours of step by step instructions on how to use the Grants Module in dacdb.com and some practical tips on stewarding a grant project.  Distinctions between district and global grants were explained and Mike Little explained how global scholarships and peace fell scholarships differ.

The faculty included our Chair, Chuck Arnason, the grants team SuAnne Hardee Bryant (Chair), Bill Liepis ( Global Grants), Mike Little (Scholarships), and Wayne Boggs from the Grant  Audit team filling in for the Chair, Don Vaught.

Just a few highlights …

– district grants in our district now require certification of attendance at an interactive GMS

– the application, documentation and reporting process is all digital through the dacdb grants     module

– this year all district grants must be closed out by June 15, but

– a club’s 2016-17 grant must be closed out before a 2017-18 grant can be approved for that club, so

– submit the final report for the 2016-17 grant in advance of the May 15 district grant application deadline

and there’s more, but

If your club needs GMS certification register for either the April 8 or the April 29 GMS Webinar on dacdb.com calendar. You can attend in person or in your home or business office.

Questions? Leave in the comments section or contact our DRFC, Chuck Arnason.

Next week … some tips on removing facial hair and an update of year to date club giving.

District Team Training Seminar (DTTS)

Club leaders for the 2017-2018 Rotary year joined District Governor-Elect John Padgett as they exchanged Rotary 7600 goals for the coming year. Known for his sartorial proclivities John did not disappoint wearing chinos with the Rotary logo embroidered on them, all over them.

District Rotary Foundation Committee (DRFC)

Chuck Arnason led the DRFC in a two-hour breakout of its own in the training room closest to the James River.  The views of the river were only mild competition for the discussions occurring within.

drfc-2017-dttsMany things were discussed but most folks can’t handle more than three things at one time so here are three …

  1. Club attendance at a Grant Management Seminar is required for both District and for Global Grants.  This is a change from previous requirements.
  2. Three Grant Managment Seminars (GMS) will be offered this spring, any one of which qualify to satisfy the attendance requirement for a grant. Registration for all of the GMS will be through dacdb.com  and will cost $20.  Registration now available for the March 25 GMS thanks to the District Communications Officer Debbie Wall.
    1. March 25 – Colonial Heritage Golf Club, Williamsburg, VA.
    2. April 8th – Live Webinar, in person in Hampton or at your home computer.
    3. April 29th – Live Webinar, in person in Hampton or at your home computer.
  3. All Club Foundation Chairs, Assistant Governors, and grant involved leaders are encouraged to subscribe to this blog by email (upper left-hand corner).

There are many more important things to share, but we can save those for another time unless you just can’t wait. If so just fill out the contact form below.

The “I” in global grant

LET’S PUT THE “I” IN ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

By Bill Liepis, a Citation for Meritorious Service Recipient

As we enter Rotary Foundation month, it is timely to ponder the visionary impact of Arch Krumph on today’s Rotarians throughout the world community. As illustrated in the November Rotarian, the Foundation that started so humbly with one small donation in 1917 has truly become a “mighty lever to move the world”.

How do you and your club become a force in applying this leverage?

bill-liepis-west-metro

         Bill Liepis

It’s as simple as being a player in an international (the “I”) global grant. Not all clubs are positioned or motivated to be the lead primary sponsor club. Yet it is a real possibility for any club to be a contributing player. By doing this you add pressure to the Foundation lever. Each dollar donated by a club or individual Rotarian to a global grant, receives a match of $.50 from the Foundation World Fund … your $200 becomes $300 to do even more good. Additionally, after accounting for all the D7600 club dollars promised for a given grant there will be an allocation of District Designated Fund (DDF) credits that will be converted to real dollars and matched on a $1:$1 basis by the World Fund when the grant is approved. The impact of these matches is gives even more lift to make a sustainable and worthwhile difference.

District 7600 clubs have a positive record of service in our local communities through the annual allocation of DDF to District grants and club self-funded projects. Why not consider how  to” stretch your community” to do service in the Caribbean (child health), Costa Rica (economic development), Liberia (water), the Philippines (child health), Rwanda (medical team training), or Uganda (water). All these countries have in process applications being sponsored by D7600 primary clubs that are ready and willing to share the joy and satisfaction of doing good around the world with willing contributing partners. There is no bottom line for what a club might want to commit but rather the willingness to be a part of a bigger impact. And should your club have a member(s) that have a passion borne out of an association with an international club consider being the lead sponsor for D7600.

Whatever the motivation feel free to contact your D7600 Grants Team for more information, a global grants course “101”, or to point you to a contact for one of the in-process grants:  Chuck Arnason, Stephen Beer, SuAnne Bryant, or Bill Liepis.

tired of politics? apply for a global grant

Global Grants, Global Grants Chair Bill Liepis, Grants Chair SuAnne Bryant

Yes, it is a tad more complex than that, but:

Many clubs in the district have experience with district grants.  Far fewer clubs have experience with global grants.  The deadlines for round 1 and round 2 of district grants have come and gone, but global grants are on a rolling deadline.  If your club or your club and sister clubs are thinking about building a global grant there is time to do that.

Where do you start?

The first place to start is by looking at the grants documents that are on this the

SuAnne Bryant Grants Chair

SuAnne Bryant

documents page on this website. Go to that page and scroll down to SuAnne Bryant’s pretty picture and look at the slides and other links she has placed there.

SuAnne is the District Grants Chair and is eager to encourage global

bill-liepis-west-metro

grant engagement by clubs in District 7600.  Her Global Grants Chair is Bill Liepis of the Western Henrico club and is the lead on all matters relating to district grants.  Both SuAnne and Bill can be found via dacdb.com.  Log on to dacdb.com, click on  ‘find a member’ , type in one of their names, and click on search.

If you have already reviewed some of the material available you will have a head start on what questions you need to ask to get started.  Review of these materials will also give you a jump start by helping prepare you for the Grant Management Seminars which will begin in the spring of 2017.  In-person attendance at a Grants Management Seminar is a requirement of The Rotary Foundation to be eligible to receive a rotary grant.

There are additional resources on MyRotary relating to global grants.  There are even video classes on this and other topics.

In the next few weeks watch this space for more local information on global grants … the top five things to know, what global grants are underway in the district, what global grants are being developed and looking for partners, global scholars, and other key topics.

On another note … District Foundation Awards Banquet

Register now on dacdb.com calendar for this November 10th event. Be among the 52 clubs and 132 awards to be granted.

Does your club need to send a representative to the Grant Management Seminar (GMS) on March 19?  Your club does, if …

  • your club would like to participate in a global grant (GMS is required)
  • your club would benefit from learning how to do a needs assessment for a district or a global grant
  • your club would benefit from leaning about the online grant application process for either type of grant
  • your club would benefit from learning how to monitor and document your grant project from beginning to closeout
  • your club would like to hook-up with other clubs on a global grant

imageSuAnne Hardee Bryant will be presenting on these and other grant related topics on Saturday, March 19 at the Colonial Heritage Country Club in Williamsburg.  It is a morning-only seminar leaving plenty of time for golf or shopping in the afternoon.  There is limited time to register so do so now at dacdb.com.  Have a debit or credit card handy. More details are available when you register.

With existing district grants required to close out before applying for a new district grant (May 15 application deadline), the timing of this GMS is perfect.

Key district grant milestones

Winter will soon turn into Spring.  Thoughts will wander and many will daydream about baseball games, cookouts, swimming, and wine-tasting tours, but ..

March through May is a cyclonic time span when it comes to district grants …

— Presidents-Elect will return from the Presidents-Elect Training Seminar with a list of deadlines, dos, and questions.

–one deadline is the May 15 deadline for the submission of  2016-17 district grant applications; another deadline will be May 14, because …

— if that club had a 2015-16 district grant then that grant must have been finalized, meaning all final reporting must have been made to district … or …

— that club’s 2016-17 district grant application will not be considered in the first round of grant award consideration.  But don’t wait til May 14 to attempt to close out a prior grant.

SuAnne Bryant Grants Chair

SuAnne Bryant District Grants Chair

To help clarify this and other particulars, the District will sponsor its Grant Management Seminar (GMS)  on March 19 at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse in Williamsburg. Registration is open now on dacdb.com on the district calendar.  Cost is only $25.

The GMS satisfies the requirement for Global Grants, but it also provides valuable information applicable to district grants

— an outline of stewardship and reporting requirements

— how to document and closeout current grants

— the in and outs of multi-club grants

— and how to get that Simonize shine on that old car.

If you are a grant involved club or club leader please consider registering for the GMS and encourage a couple of your other members to do so as well.  Share the load.

March 19 – Williamsburg.

A Bit o’Honey … can do so much!

'Bee A Gift to the World', A Bit O' Honey, Friends of Barnabas, Global Grants, Honduras Pediatric Hospital, Innsbrook Rotary

The header image of this issue of the blog features a pediatric cardiac surgery being performed in Honduras which benefited from Rotarian humanitarian efforts. Prior to there being a permanent pediatric cardiac unit in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, such critical surgeries had to wait until visiting medical teams, along with equipment and supplies, could be put together to come on a periodic visiting basis to perform such surgeries.

A permanent pediatric cardiac surgical ward was created and opened in February 2015 due to many years work on a global grant spearheaded by three Rotary districts, including District 7600, lead by the Innsbrook club and 8 of its sister clubs, the Friends of Barnabas Foundation, the Ruth Paz Foundation , and the The Rotary Foundation World Fund.  The grant included a Vocational Training Team to train local health personnel on the equipment provided by the grant.  The total grant budget was $112,300, of which $23,000 was donated by the District 7600 clubs.  With district and World Fund matching monies and donations for the other partners, this complicated, but magnificent project came to fruition.

BitohoneyThree years after a Rotarian donates to the Annual Fund, 50% of that donation comes back to the District to help fund district and global grants.  This Innsbrook Rotary-led global grant is only one example of such a global grant.  These global grants provide an opportunity for smaller clubs to join in with larger clubs to participate in international (global) projects,  which that club might not be financially able to do on its own.  Not all grants are global and even all global grants are not necessarily this complex, but we as Rotarians are capable of so much.  It starts with the honey, the money.

So the challenge is out to the Rotarians of District 7600, their clubs, their Club Foundation Chairs, their Foundation Advocates, and to all champions of The Rotary Foundation to reach into their own pockets, to encourage others to do so,  and donate to The Rotary Foundation.  This will assist the clubs in meeting their 2015-16 Rotary Foundation giving goals and will help us all ‘Bee’ A Gift to the World.  A Bit O’ Honey can go such a long way!

Global Grants, Gwen Carter, Petersburg Rotary, Thank You

Welcome back from the holidays:

As we enter the second half of the Rotary year and the preparation months for the next pi5preeiBRotary year, we veteran Club Foundation Chairs and Foundation Advocates know we will be pulling reports, following up on promises to give, checking status of district grants, helping set future goals, and generally cheer leading from the front lines. Our goals are to ‘Finish Strong … and Get Ready.’

And think about this …

For a moment let’s remember that as Rotarians we are sharing when we give, whether it is giving our time, talent, or money.  Let’s resolve to be thankful and express our appreciation for the sharing in which our Rotarian colleagues engage.

Gwen Carter

Gwen Carter-Petersburg Rotary

I was reminded of this thought while clearing my desk this morning as I came across a thank you note I had received on behalf of the Petersburg Rotary. The pre-published legend captured the essence of Rotary giving and the handwritten note by Gwen Carter captured my heart. It made me feel so special.

Thanks to you for what you do as Foundation Advocates and Club Foundation Chairs. Without you we could not ‘Bee a Gift to the World.’

And thank you to Gwen for taking the time to bring a smile to my face.

Are your clubs ready for Rotary Foundation Month?

Great club interest in global grants

Before the lead topic which is Rotary Foundation Month, let’s pause to reflect on this week’s header.  It features our District Foundation Committee Chair and Past District Governor, Jim Probsdorfer,  addressing remarks to the standing-room-only global grants session at the District Conference.  He wasn’t the only speaker.  A delegation from the Innsbrook Club & Friends of Barnaby spoke of their partnership and multi-club project in Honduras, and Roma Frye of the Newport News Club described a recent three-bridge, Bridges to Prosperity project in Africa.  It also was a partnership and multi-club project. These two projects included District 7600 clubs which were smaller than the lead clubs, but gave those clubs a chance to get skin in the game on large scale international projects.  SuAnne Bryant is the go-to person for more information on global grants.

November -Rotary Foundation Month

Yesterday the Foundation Advocates received a resource packed email which originated with Liz Lazar, our Annual Giving Officer at The Rotary Foundation.  She covers Zones prouddonor33 & 34 which happily includes District 7600.  The email is reprinted here, November Foundation Month, and you are invited to refer to it as you encourage or arrange for your club(s) to participate and advocate in a major way for The Rotary Foundation during the month of November. Many of you are are Foundation Advocates, Area Governors, Club Foundation Chairs, or Foundation groupies, but whatever your role or interest please encourage your clubs to make the most of the resources (with links) provided by Liz.

Foundation Awards Banquet-2014-2015 Awards

November 12 is the date of our Annual Foundation Awards Banquet in Williamsburg at the Colonial Heritage Country Club. Anne Matthews, Past Rotary International Vice-President will be our keynote speaker.  It will be a packed two hour dinner and program during which many clubs from our district will be recognized for their commitment and accomplishments. Registration is open on www.dacdb.com.  Get it on your calendar, register early, and bring your spouse and fellow club members.  Make it a gala evening to remember.

Shout out

This shout out is for Boo Elmore of the Chester Club who is organizing the World Polio Day efforts of the district Interact and Rotaract Clubs which will host Purple Pinkie events on October 23rd & 24th.  Find one and get your pinkie done!

Brave New World of Rotary Grants

Grants With Impact

Jim Probsdorfer (“Probs”), District Rotary Foundation Chair, recently related a short PawPawBushhistory of the new world of Rotary grants to District leaders. This history began with “Future Vision” which was the pilot and transition to a systematic revamping of all Rotary grants. The ultimate goal of Future Vision was to increase the impact made on communities by Rotary grant projects.  Greater impact means a higher profile for Rotary which in turn leads to increased membership and increased giving.

One aspect of the revamped Rotary grants is evident in District 7600.  According to Probs in the 2012-2013 year our District Simplified Grants totaled $46,700. In the 2013 -14 year (the transition year) the District Grant Program totaled $116,000.  In 2014-2015 it totaled  $119,800.  This year the total is $122,800 >>> that’s almost $350,000 in local service projects in 2013-14, 2014-15 and now 2015-16.  Quite an increase from the $46,700 three years previously.

Area 7 Foundation Advocate, Stan Wall

Area 7 Foundation Advocate, Stan Wall

The 2015-2016 Grant Spending Plan for District 7600 has been approved and the District leadership is in the process of contacting the 15 project leads (some of the approved grants are multi-club projects) of their successful applications.  Of the fifteen successful projects most are in the areas of Education (literacy and STEM) and Community Development (often partnering with governmental entities) to provide healthy facilities for youngsters and those with disabilities. More will be published about these projects in the future.

Foundation Workshop on August 1 … a Gateway to Grants

Register for the Foundation Workshop.  Yes, there is still time to register!

Workshop Flyer

Workshop Flyer

Grab a buddy or two and carpool.  When you register you will select Giving, Grants, or Grant Writing.  If three from your club attend you will cover all the Foundation bases.

In the Giving Workshop you will learn the many ways Rotarians may engage in supporting and promoting Foundation Giving which has a direct impact on the amount of grant award money available to District in any given year.  Giving Chair, Ken Hodge, is an inspiring leader, but also knows how to connect with the nuts and bolts of giving campaigns.

Grants will hone in on the criteria, areas of focus, and the definitions of accountability and sustainability which are the keystones in modern grant giving.  SuAnne Bryant is a living, breathing encyclopedia of Rotary Grants and what makes sense ‘grant-wise’  in District 7600.

SuAnne also teaches the Grant Writing Workshop.  This is not only about the writing of the application, but is also about the maintaining of records along the way, and the successful close-out and final reporting which opens the door to future grant awards for a club.

So, share a Saturday morning with other Rotarians in historic Williamsburg  to jump start your club’s knowledge of the world of Rotary Grants.
