Fundraising Goals for Polio Met:

This week District Rotary Foundation Chair (DRFC) Stephen Beer (Innsbrook) shared an email he received from Chuck Davidson, the Zone 33 Polio Chair. Chuck’s email covered an email from Brenda Cressey, the Immediate Past Chair of The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Part of email dealt with our Polio fundraising and eradication efforts.

Her email reported that the Polio Eradication fundraising goal of last year (2018-2019) of $50 million had been surpassed. This good news comes along with Chuck’s good news that as of July 24, 2019, there were NO new cases of the polio wildvirus in Pakistan or Afghanistan in the seven days prior.

Our own district is part of that success! Colleen Bonadonna (New Kent), our District Polio Chair, has put enormous energy into raising awareness and financial commitment in District 7600 towards eradicating Polio. According to Rudy Garcia (Fluvanna), our district’s Immediate Past Development Chair reports that in 2018-19, our district Polio donations were $107, 894. There was also a District Designated Funds (DDF) match of $57, 616 for a grant total of $165,510 towards Polio eradication.

Rotarians are #peopleofaction and action and action.

We did it in 2018-2019!

The district clubs met their goals overall :))

Joy Kline (Goochland) published her final “Joy” Report after the Rotary books closed around mid month. Assuming there are no late discovered errors or needed minor adjustments, the total annual fund giving goals of the District 7600 clubs were met at the 120% level.

We referred above to the “final ‘Joy’ Report” only because Joy has moved into her new role as the Development Chair for the District Rotary Foundation Committee (DRFC). David Rosenthal of the Hampton Roads club is now the Annual Fund Chair and will continue to provide updated reports.

And now for a few particulars:

The clubs’ Annual Fund giving goals for the 2018-19 year totaled $475,500. The total Annual Fund giving for the year was $571,622 meaning that our clubs’ giving came it at 120%. Way to go, clubs! District per capita giving was $213.

Many clubs exceeded their goals and some clubs fell a tad short, but all tried to support The Rotary Foundation. Good years come and sometimes less than good years come. This year the Mechanicsville club had a good year with a per capita giving level of $591, coming in at a 165% fulfilment of their Annual Fund giving goal.

July is change of Leadership month and:

July is also the month when Rotary Districts around the world learn whether the club Rotary Foundation giving goals have been met. The other milestone in July is that clubs learn if their District Grant applications have been approved.

Foundation Giving Goals:

The giving year for 2019-2020 ended on June 30, 2019. However, it takes a couple of weeks to correctly process the donations and make sure the catagories of giving are correct.

Based on her initial check, Joy Kline, now our District Rotary Foundation Development Chair, is convinced that District 7600 clubs met their giving goals. Next week we will know how much we gave and by how much we may have exceeded our giving goals. Stay tuned.

Fireworks of Success

District Grant Approvals:

Stephen Beer, our District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair (DRFC) has announced that the district’s spending plan has been approved. Very shortly, probably next week, letters will go out to the clubs involved in the approved district grants. Will your club be one of them? Stay tuned.

Many of us will be congregating in Williamsburg tomorrow (Saturday, June 13) for the District Change of Leadership and for the District Awards ceremonies

Week left to give to The Rotary Foundation!

There is only one week left for clubs and Rotarians to give to The Rotary Foundation. Out total District 7600 Rotary Foundation giving is lagging behind last year at this time according to Joy Kline’s “Joy” Report.

Is it enough that we just meet our goals?

Well, that may depend on the integrity of the goals set. Just remember that the amount of monies available for district grants in a given year depend upon the district’s annual fund giving amount three years prior. If ho hum goals have been set and met, then three years later there will be ho hum funds available for worthy district grant.

The same applies for global grants:

District giving three years prior also impacts funds for global grants. The only difference being that at least some unused funds in the World Fund can be rolled over from one Rotary year to the next.

So, make the final 2018-19 Joy Report, Joyful!

The forecast is sunny with a chance of Baseball!

April is Maternal & Child Health Month:

April 2: District 7600 Giving Tuesday. Individual contributions matched up to $500. Must be made online in My Rotary to the Annual Fund. April 2 only. Accelerate your first or your multiple Paul Harris Fellow Recognition.

April 20: Grant Management Webinar. Attendance qualifies a club to apply for a Rotary grant. Attendees may attend in person or in the location of their choice by computer. Attendees will need access to wifi/internet connection. This is the final chance for a club to meet this attendance requirement. Registration is free and is on the dacdb.com calendar.

April 27: District Training Assembly & the Foundation, Public Image, and Membership Seminars (no separate August Seminars this year). The Grant Doctors will be on duty that day. Registration will be available next week on dacdb.com calendar.

May is Youth Service Month:

May 1: Clubs must have entered their Foundation Giving Goals for the year in Rotary Club Central to be eligible to apply for a Rotary grant. This is a new district requirement.

May 1: Clubs will need to have closed out any district grants for the 2018-2019 year to be eligible to apply for a district grant. All grant related processes are completed in the grants module on dacdb.com.

May 2: Polio + Baseball at the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park.

May 23-26: Marshalling at the LPGA Tournament at Kingsmill.

Welcome home to the Costa Rica Literacy Global Grant Team:

This was a follow on visit to Costa Rica by members of the Rotary Clubs of Richmond, Huguenot Trails, James River, and South Richmond. This multi-year, multi-club global grant provides books in the English language for a regional Costa Rican school system. On previous visits Rotarians realized that there was a shortage of toothbrushes and toothpaste in the schools. So they chipped in on the side and brought along the much needed items. This grant was featured in the March issue of the Spirit of 7600 which can be found on rotary7600.org. A follow up article will be featured in the May issue of the Spirit.

District Giving Tuesday: Get a boost towards your Paul Harris Fellow

Let’s Celebrate Onine District 7600 “Giving Tuesday” on April 2

Giving Tuesday in Rotary District 7600 is on Tuesday, 2 April 2019. On that day contributions to the Annual Fund made online will be matched with recognition points up to an individual contribution total of $500.00. 

To receive the matching points, you must contribute on that day only through online giving at My Rotary.  If you don’t have a My Rotary account you will need to set it up in advance of the 2 April 2019 date as it takes a day or two to be established.

Last year the District raised $52,639.00, a 6% increase from the 2017 Giving Tuesday’s amount.  Hopefully, we can beat the 2018 mark this year.

Remember, only individual, online contributions to the Annual Fund made on 2 April 2019 are eligible for matching points. 

Rotarians who have attained Paul Harris Fellow plus 8 (PHS+8) are ineligible for recognition points as they can only be transferred once and do not count towards Major Donor status.

Going out with a bang:

cropped-relaxed-rotarians-in-evanston.jpgChuck’s tenure as the District Rotary Foundation Chair (“DRFC”) ends on June 30, 2019, but our banquet on November 8th will be his last Foundation Awards Banquet as the DRFC.

It is poetic that his last banquet will celebrate the district’s first $1,000,000 year in 2017T1718_EN-2018. Past District Governor ({DG) John D. Padgett and DRFC Chuck Arnason want to celebrate the clubs and devoted Rotarians responsible for this stellar year of generosity. As PDG John’s theme stated “Rotary: Making a Difference.”

 

Hair today, gone tomorrow:

You may remember that previously to Chuck challenged Rotarians to give, give, give and in exchange he would shave his head. Well, they did and he did.

This year he has made no such challenge, but maybe we could give him a special thanks for his innovation of the recognition points match on “Giving Tuesdays, the special promotion of Benefactor promises, and his strong support of the Paul Harris Society, which he once chaired before becoming District Governor  … oh so long ago.

He and PDG John are proud also, that this year District 7600 has two generous donors inducted into the e Arch Klumph Society.

But, Chuck & John salute all Rotarians who dipped into their accounts or their estates to support the work of The Rotary Foundation.

If you haven’t registered yet for the District 7600 Foundation Awards Banquet, you still have a few days to sign up on dacdb.com.  We want a great turn out to help celebrate the generosity of the D7600 Clubs and member donors.  After all, 2017-18 is our very first M I L L I O N Dollar giving year.

First off, register yourself and/ or your spouse/significant other, so you have someone to chat with on the road.

Secondly, if you are reading this on Facebook, “like” it and write a comment about your own Rotary Foundation story. Do this even if you have already registered. Next share it to your own timeline or any Facebook page on which you may post.

Finally, there are fourteen clubs which are on the Awards list which have not had anyone from the club register. If you can put a bug in the right persons’ ears to get those clubs represented, it would be super much appreciated.

Another reason to come to the Foundation Banquet:

Zoe Romano, our most recent District Global Scholar, has just returned from her two years of graduate study and volunteer teaching in South America and she will be our Keynoter at the Banquet.

Zoe was nominated to District 7600 as a Global Scholar candidate by the Rotary Club of South Richmond (SRRC to those in the know). She and SRRC had developed a relationship when she ran the Tour de France route to raise money for medical supplies for children as part of an SRRC project.

Because of that relationship the South Richmond club committed to the sometimes frustrating and long-lived application process for Zoe. The District approved her candidacy and allocated funds to her scholarship. Fortunately, The Rotary Foundation supported her application in April 2016, and the entire South Richmond club went on vacation.

We don’t want to share too much more here because we want there to still be some things for you to learn about her on November 8th.  We will tell you that since returning from her studies, she and William Byers have married, honeymooned, and are now free to join us as we honor our clubs and members for their generosity in this first mi$$ion dollar year of giving in District 7600.

Please come and meet Zoe and William on November 8th in Williamsburg. You will also have the chance to talk with some of the SRRC folks if your club has an interest in supporting the candidacy of a global scholar. Register on dacdb.com

Forty-Four clubs will receive Foundation recognitions. Ten Rotarians from the district will receive District Service Awards.  The Outstanding Alumni Award and the Pierce Foundation Leadership Award will be bestowed upon two very deserving Rotarians from District 7600. How many of your friends will be among the recipients?

What will happen on the evening of November 8th?  We’ll see the clubs recognized which in 2017-18:

  • achieved $250 + in per capita giving (there are 18 of them)
  • were the top three per capita giving clubs
  • were among the 26 100% Foundation Giving Clubs
  • were among the 25 EREY Clubs
  • were among the 28 clubs with over $1,500 to End Polio Now

There are just a few of the highlights from the evening of celebration the 2017-2018 giving year.

Over 100 attended the Sensational Trio of August Rotary Seminars (#STARS):

It was a day filled with information, suggestions, innovative ideas and just a little bit of fun. We were all there to equip ourselves to “Be the Inspiration”. The Colonial Heritage Country Club in Williamsburg may never be the same. And Rotarians are innovative. Sometimes they switched seminars.  Gotta love these D7600 Rotarians

Public Image or How to share our Rotary stories:

Lead by the District Newsletter Editor and Public Image Chair, JoAnn Meaker, the 25 or so Rotarians in the Seminar, enjoyed intimate surroundings, printed materials, and demonstrations of the EZ Bulletin feature on dacdb.com.  LaShonda Delivuk, Public Image Chair from District 7570 also inspired the attendees with her presentation on the interplay between membership and public image.

Membership, It’s the only thing!

MembershipShelDouglas (2)The takeaway, oft repeated in the plenary sessions was “Membership, it’s the only thing.” 35+ Rotarians in the Membership seminar were led capably by District Membership Co-Chairs, Mike Jallo, and Shel Douglas.  LaShonda Delivuk also spoke in this session about the synergy between membership and public image.  No one will know our Rotary stories unless we have members to share their stories and unless our members share them.

The Rotary Foundation: How our good works are funded:

Approximately 42 Rotarians attended this session. Chuck Arnason, Rotary District Foundation Chair, and his team of Rudy Lee Garcia (Development),  Joy Kline (Annual Giving), Bill Billings (Endowment),  Appaiah Ballachanda (Paul Harris Society), Stan Wall (Polio Plus),  SuAnne Hardee Bryant (Grants), and Don Vaught (Grants Auditor). Just when one thinks there is nothing new to learn, Foundation-wise, there arise new requirements.  In this session, SuAnne focused on global grants, and our featured speaker Shel Douglas spoke on the more formal Community or Needs Assessments required of global grant applications.  The materials from The Rotary Foundation Seminar on d7600foundation.org on The Foundation Workshop Materials 2018 page.  There were no slides or handouts for the Paul Harris Society (PHS) as Appaiah is a walking cheerleader for the PHS.

The learning was not the only fun:

JoAnn Meaker designed the STARS meme and hashtag #STARS to help promote the workshops.  Dana Rieves, JoAnn Meaker, and Prince George Electric Cooperative provided the stellar door prizes.  David Rosenthal made all aware that it was also National Mustard Day. We decided to inspire every registrant to bring a new, unopened container of mustard to donate. Those who forgot often donated cash instead. Neva Lynde and her fellow James City County Satellite Club volunteered to carry the mustard to the FISH Food Bank.

#STARS 16 Days & Counting:

Good news.  You have 16 days to register for the District 7600 #Join the STARS (#STARS for short!)

At least 3 members from each club should attend, if not more.  There are three separate seminars and each Rotarian registers for just one of the seminars … either Membership, Public Image, or Foundation. The chairs or at least a member of each club committee in these areas should be present to learn:

  • best practices
    • Foundation led by Chuck Arnason & Team
    • Membership lead by Mike Jallo & Shel Douglas
    • Public Image led by JoAnn Meaker & team
  • latest Rotary International messaging in each seminar
  • requirements in the documentation updates for clubs activities & projects
  • latest grant requirements with a focus on Community Assessments
  • Lashonda Delivuk, D7570 Public Image Vice-Chair, speaking in both the membership & public image seminars

Clubs, a message to all … want to excel in innovative club presence, reporting, and starsvitality … send as many club members as possible to be exposed to and ride the rockets that will send your club to the #STARS.

When you have registered consider, going on your facebook page and put #STARS into your post and mention that you have registered for one of the seminars.  If you want to tell folks which one use a hashtag, e.g. #foundation or #membership or #publicimage. That will build the buzz for the seminars.

Million$Year … 2017-2018

The Rotary Foundation books have closed for the 2017-2018 year.  There will be some adjustments, but it is totally safe to report that in Past District Governor John Padgett’s and District Rotary Foundation Chair, Chuck Arnason’s past year, District 7600’s members donated 1.1 million dollars in total giving. More refined figures will be released soon, but needless to say, this is a B A N N E R year for District 7600. More on the other figures very soon.

We are off to a rollicking start: Tally Ho!

What has happened so far?

The Spirit of 7600 July 2018 issue has been published and sent to every Rotarian in District 7600.  Our District Governor Susan and Spirit Editor JoAnn Meaker braved swollen streams and database outages to get the Spirit published on time with some gentle assist from, now, Past District Governor John and the District Rotary Foundation Chair Chuck.

If you don’t see the Spirit from Susan, look in your spam folder.  If it is there, label it is “not spam” and it should come to your email account thereafter.   If you want to see your club’s name in lights, get your articles and pictures to JoAnn by around the 20th of each month. You may send Foundation related articles to Carol Woodward, but all submitted articles will be considered for the Spirit.

The Rotary International database has returned after a few days of  R and R.  Between the 15th & 20th of July we should have a very close accounting of our district’s giving history for the 2017-18 year.

Dacdb.com took Saturday and Sunday off for some rollover maintenance functions, but it has returned just in time to satisfy all of your unquenchable needs for district information.

What is going to happen?

District Rotary Foundation Chair Chuck and his grants team are in the process of notifying clubs as to the status of their grant applications.  Good luck everybody!

What is new & improved?

The giving portal on rotary.org has been streamlined and it is so, so easy to give online now.  Go to myrotary.org/donate and “voila” you are in the donation portal. To complete your donation you will need to log on by entering your username (usually your rotary email address) and your password.
