Where will you find D7600 Rotarians?

Last week as we ushered in Peace and Conflict Resolution Month we highlighted work in progress on Water and Sanitation global grant projects in Ghana. District Rotarians Shel Douglas (Prince George) and Past District Governor Stephen Beer (Innsbrook) are on the ground on that series of grants. Yes, you will get a little update.

India:

We also have had a team in India working on preventing polio and vaccinating children. The 7600 Rotarians on that trip are Colleen Bonadonna (New Kent) our district’s Polio Plus Chair, Dianna M. Waters (Brandermill), and Muriel Hawkins (Petersburg Lunch). After two weeks of work, they are getting a little R & R.

Costa Rica:

We have also learned of a global grant project in Costa Rica spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Richmond, with the Rotary Clubs of James River and Huguenot Trail joining in. This project has been to provide English language books to elementary schools in Costa Rica. Members from the Richmond Club have already been on one or more trips to Costa Rica including, Michael Little, Jeanne Walls, E.M. Miller, and John Delandro. Around the end of March, there will be another trip of local Rotarians to Costa Rica to bring additional books to assist elementary school children in learning and improving their English language skills. Mike Little, Jeanne Walls, Kelly Keene, and Karin Jimenez (James River Club) are scheduled to go on that trip along with Mike’s and Jeanne’s spouses.

Ghana:

The district Rotarians have actually just landed in Accra (about 1 pm our time Thursday) where they will meet with the District Governor on Friday morning. Then the team will have a few hours to shop, rest, read, whatever before they catch their flight back to Virginia. Two pictures sent by Shel captured this writer and are shared here. This is also an homage to our Rotarians in India just about to finish their work there.

Part of the grant project in the Andasi village in Ghana was to install a block of micro-flush toilets. This project builder is a young man trained last year by the grant’s master trainer. Everyone had said that this polio survivor would never be successful. He has proved them wrong!

This blog is just a teaser … More in the March Spirit of 7600

All three project trips will be featured in more detail in the March Spirit of 7600. It is an abundance of riches to have many of our District 7600 Rotarians engaged in three different international endeavors, Polio Plus, and two global grants, but how interconnected they are! Doing good in the world.

We are off to a rollicking start: Tally Ho!

HappyNewYear.BetheInspiration (2)

What has happened so far?

The Spirit of 7600 July 2018 issue has been published and sent to every Rotarian in District 7600.  Our District Governor Susan and Spirit Editor JoAnn Meaker braved swollen streams and database outages to get the Spirit published on time with some gentle assist from, now, Past District Governor John and the District Rotary Foundation Chair Chuck.

If you don’t see the Spirit from Susan, look in your spam folder.  If it is there, label it is “not spam” and it should come to your email account thereafter.   If you want to see your club’s name in lights, get your articles and pictures to JoAnn by around the 20th of each month. You may send Foundation related articles to Carol Woodward, but all submitted articles will be considered for the Spirit.

The Rotary International database has returned after a few days of  R and R.  Between the 15th & 20th of July we should have a very close accounting of our district’s giving history for the 2017-18 year.

Dacdb.com took Saturday and Sunday off for some rollover maintenance functions, but it has returned just in time to satisfy all of your unquenchable needs for district information.

What is going to happen?

District Rotary Foundation Chair Chuck and his grants team are in the process of notifying clubs as to the status of their grant applications.  Good luck everybody!

The District Awards and Change of Leadership will be on July 14 at Colonial Heritage Country Club in Williamsburg and you have a few more days to register on dacdb.com calendar.

Your club should #JointheStars or the Sensational Trio of August Rotary Seminars on August 4th.  Click on the link for the Join the STARS Flyer. Register through July 28th for this stellar training opportunity.  Go to dacdb.com calendar and register for one of the three topical seminars … Foundation, Public Image, or Membership.  Yes, you choose only one topic.  Maybe you could get some of your club colleagues to register for the other seminars.  More details will follow, but just think great breakfast, great topics, and door prizes, door prizes, door prizes.

What is new & improved?

The giving portal on rotary.org has been streamlined and it is so, so easy to give online now.  Go to myrotary.org/donate and “voila” you are in the donation portal. To complete your donation you will need to log on by entering your username (usually your rotary email address) and your password.

See you on the 14th in Williamsburg!

a view from indie place farm …

It’s summer or has anyone noticed?  It doesn’t seem so long ago that I was breaking ice on the herd’s water supply. Recently I harvested hay. Soon I’ll be preparing for Fall. Change is natural and on a farm it is cyclical.  The Rotary year is very similar.  A new Rotary year brings new faces, or at least familiar faces in new roles, new Rotary policies, and new Rotary tools.  We have a lot to be grateful for as we plunge into the Rotary year, but we also have some changes to adjust to.  The District Membership and Foundation Workshop is coming at a perfect time to update clubs on adjustments in Rotary policies, describe new strategies, and celebrate our accomplishments. Join us in this evolution …Chuck

Changes to celebrate in 7600 …

Clubs now have increased autonomy and flexibility in how they ‘meet’, how often they meet (at least twice a month minimum), and how they can attract and engage members. There are changes on the Foundation side as well.  There are changes in the EREY and Sustaining Member Recognition Banners which will reflect, slightly differently, how clubs are recognized based on club and member giving to The Rotary Foundation.  Oh, yes, there is the Celebration of 100 years of doing good in the world by The Rotary Foundation.

Where can Rotarians learn about these changes?

Many places, of course, The Rotarian magazine, My Rotary at http://www.rotary.org, and in various newsletters and discussion groups also hosted on http://www.rotary.org.  A really cool place, though, to learn about some of the changes is at the Membership and Foundation Workshops this Saturday, August 6th in Williamsburg.  The registration deadline has been extended to Thursday, August 4th.  Just do it.  Go to http://www.dacdb.com ‘Calendar’, pull out the credit card and register, by golly.

What else to celebrate?

chuckheadshavingDistrict 7600 Rotarians broke Foundation Giving records in the 2015-16 Rotary year. We shattered the per capita giving record with our Rotarians giving at a per capita rate of $211.44.  We also broke records by donating a total of $718,358.  I wrote about this in the July Spirit of 7600, the District Newsletter which published on July 30.  Did you miss it in your email inbox?  Take a look at it on http://www.rotary7600.org.  When similar giving records were shattered during my year as District Governor, I had my head shaved.  I just want to know whose head gets shaved this year?

Speaking of newsletters …

This year there will be one district-wide newsletter, the Spirit of 7600.  It will, however, be chock full of Foundation articles and recognition of generous donors and industrious grant projects.  In your email account you will see an email from DG Diane and the subject line will begin with Spirit of 7600.  If you don’t see it check your spam folder.  You should do that regularly anyway.  You would be surprised what gets directed there.

Tides End Polio Now Baseball Game helps roll up Polio

Dave Mansfield, the Rotary Tides Polio Plus Game Chair, reports a successful event to help raise funds to eradicate Polio …  335 tickets were purchased by Rotarians and friends  and the Tides allocated $4.50 donation each ticket for a total of  $1,507.50.  Add the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation match and the total raised by the Tides game is $4,522.50.  Job well done, Dave, and many thanks to our Norfolk Tides for their generosity. Next week we’ll update with a round up article about the games.
