Welcome home to the Costa Rica Literacy Global Grant Team:

This was a follow on visit to Costa Rica by members of the Rotary Clubs of Richmond, Huguenot Trails, James River, and South Richmond. This multi-year, multi-club global grant provides books in the English language for a regional Costa Rican school system. On previous visits Rotarians realized that there was a shortage of toothbrushes and toothpaste in the schools. So they chipped in on the side and brought along the much needed items. This grant was featured in the March issue of the Spirit of 7600 which can be found on rotary7600.org. A follow up article will be featured in the May issue of the Spirit.

“A little bit of Rotary and a whole lot of fun …”

The quote was District Governor Elect (DGE), John Padgett’s response when asked what he wanted District 7600 club leaders and members to take away from the District Training Assembly.

If you are an incoming or continuing club leader, a committee chair or member, a new Rotarian, or just curious about what DGE John will be wearing on May 13, you should just go register on dacdb.com calendar, now.  There is still time to do so.

DGE John Padgett and Al Rossendaal2

DGE John at right giving PE Al Rosendaal helpful tips at PETS

Seriously, come have some fun, fellowship, relationship forming, focus, learning more about Rotary at a personal level,  especially

  • how to attract and engage members and club partners,
  • how to meet the financial and administrative duties of a modern Rotary club,
  • how to connect more intensely with your communities,
  • how to broaden your communities,
  • how to engage more with The Rotary Foundation,
  • and, other stuff.

John is really excited about the two sessions on Social Media for Rotary clubs. Who doesn’t need to learn more about  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on? We don’t all have teenagers at home to teach us.

The attire is comfortable casual or comfortable weird.  You choose.

tutubeerDon’t be surprised at all by what DGE John might be wearing on May 13. Remember that he got his sartorial mentoring from Past District Governor Stephen Beer.

Oh, forgive me, Bill Billings, let me atone

GMS:  Grant Management Seminar; DTA: District Training Assembly, and COL, Change of Leadership …

This last session of the Grant Management Seminar for the 2017 -18 year is this Saturday and qualifies for certification of attendance via webinar or in person at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton VA.  This is a free training and those are hard to come by.  If your club isn’t certified yet to participate in a district or local grant, this is your chance to fix that.  Just a friendly reminder that the deadline for district grant application submission is May 15 & and another friendly reminder … it is a totally electronic submission process.

DTA: Register now for this May 13 training

Diane and Rip Tide (2)

2016 DTA

District Grant Application Deadline, District Training Assembly, Donations, Grant Management Seminar, The Rotary Foundation, Webinar

Time to refresh on upcoming deadlines & events

Such an enervating and exhausting time of year for Rotarians.  The old year is closing out and the new Rotary year is already making demands of club and district leaders.  But we are tough and quoting our beloved Jim Pierce …”Can we do it? YES! YES! YES!”

April:

dana-gms-webinar29 – the last Grant Management Seminar (GMS).  This is a webinar format, but attendees may do so in person if they prefer.  There are still about 20 clubs in 7600 who have not been GMS certified to apply for or participate in a grant.  This is the last opportunity to qualify for that certification.  Register on dacdb.com calendar.

May:

We're This Close13 – District Training Assembly in Hampton at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center at 600 Butler Farm Road.  Training with breakouts for Presidents-Elect, President Nominees, Secretaries, Treasurers, Membership Chairs, and Foundation Chairs.  Any Rotarian may attend and learn a whole lot, especially if the Rotarian is a new Rotarians. Light breakfast refreshments and LUNCH! Register on dacdb.com calendar.

15 – Deadline for submission of District Grant Applications through the Grants Module on dacdb.com.  Questions? Contact SuAnne Hardee Bryant or Chuck Arnason, but please don’t wait until the last minute.  If your club had a 2016-17 grant or participated in a group grant, that grant must be fully closed out before a grant award may be awarded to that club(s) for the 2017-18 year.

June:

10 – 14 – Rotary International Convention, Atlanta.

30 – Donations must be sent to The Rotary Foundation for the donations to count for the 2016-17 Rotary Year.  Please don’t wait til midnight, June 30, please?

Questions?  Comments?

Clubs will have more autonomy in fashioning the timing and nature of club meetings and member engagement goals under new provisions out of the Council on Legislation this past week in Evanston …

New Rotary Year ushering in changes:

Zone 33-34 Director-Elect, Joe Mulkerrin,  on changes in Rotary meetings, engagement levels, and attraction methods as a result of the Council on Legislation meeting.  More details to follow soon.  Then Joe made the rounds of the breakouts.

Joe & Chuck DTA withnamesChuck Arnason,  incoming District Rotary Foundation Chair, introduced his team and goals in the Foundation breakout. It was well attended and included a number of club foundation chairs who asked incisive questions and offered practical suggestions for communication and process.  PDG/Director-Elect Joe also attended a portion of the meeting and encouraged us to stay committed to our goal of eradicating polio.  We’re in the last and hardest stages of eradication. Help that effort …

Attend the End Polio Now Baseball games:

July 7 – 2016 Rotary Night Flyer Richmond Flying Squirrels, headed by Co-Chair Stan Wall (Colonial Heights), and

July 27 – 2016 Polio Plus Tides Baseball  headed by Co-Chair Dave Mansfield.

Dave invited Riptide to attend the Assembly and he did drop by.  He had a great time.

District Training Assembly, Grant Management Seminar, May 7 Webinar, Webinar

District Training Assembly (DTA):

You’ve heard the term DTA tossed around.  What is it?  The District Training Assembly is ODU Workforce Development Centerthe annual training event for incoming club leaders, April 23rd this year. Most Rotary clubs have a leadership board of at least 10 to 12 members.  At the DTA there is specialized training for Secretaries & Treasurers and other positions,  but there is also an overview of the District Governor’s goals for the year, introduction of key district leaders, and a fantastic breakout for all things relating to The Rotary Foundation, and  many other attractions.  All incoming club leaders should come to the DTA, learn a whole lot, and have a whole lot of fellowship with Rotarians from across District 7600, and have a day off from yard work.

Where and how to register … well … dacdb.com, of course. Scroll down to April 23rd on the calendar, click on Register Now, input credit card info, and you are ‘In Like Flynn’.  There is more detailed information on the Calendar about the event.

Grant Management Seminar (GMS):

On May 7 District 7600 Rotarians have one more chance to get their clubs qualified to participate in a global grant.  You can attend in person in Hampton or by webinar.  Register as above on the dacdb.com  calendar.  However, this is a free event.  The Rotary Foundation requires that the Grant Management Seminars be interactive. Visit dacdb.com to get more details on the event.  Click  GMS 2016 (1) for a flyer.

It was such a serious District Training Assembly!

2014 -2015 Club Giving To-Date, 2015 -2016 Club Giving Goals, Club Foundation Chairs, District Training Assembly

Thanks to the Foundation Advocates and Club Foundation Chairs in attendance at the District Training Assembly … I don’t know all of the 60 something Club Foundation Chairs, but I am learning that many of the Foundation Advocates are Club Foundation Chairs for their clubs.  Foundation Advocates in attendance were Kevin Kelly (Goochland  Area 2), Stan Wall (Colonial Heights Area 7), Jan Rowley (Prince George Area 6) and outgoing Foundation Advocate Jeff Jacobs (Colonial Heights Area 7).  Jeff and Carolyn, both members of the Colonial Heights Club were honored for becoming level 2 Major Donors.  Thanks to all.

This is a heady time for all things having to do with The Rotary Foundation so the Foundation Advocates, Club Foundation Chairs, Presidents-Elect, and Area Governors have a lot on their plates.  Current priorities are achieving 2014-15 club giving goals, setting 2015-16 club giving goals and entering them into Rotary Club Central, and crafting and submitting applications for District Grants by the May 15 deadline.  Did you know there is still $2200 left over from the 2014 – 15 spending plan?  Ripe pickings for a club that can submit and complete a very focused grant by June 30.  So remember that the Presidents and Presidents-Elect cannot do it all alone.  That is why we are a community of volunteers supporting Rotary Foundation efforts.

We collected hundreds of dollars selling End Polio Now Crocuses, Croci … oh, heck … more than one crocus,  at the District Training Assembly thanks to Boo Elmore and Stan Wall.  Even DG Stephen got into the act.

Stan Wall, co-chair of the 2015 End Polio Now Games was also on hand to promote our baseball games on July 9 (Richmond Squirrels) and July 20 (Norfolk tides.)  We couldn’t get the official team mascots to the District Assembly so our our ‘Bee’utiful Jan Rowley was on hand to encourage all to turn out for the ‘Bee’ball games in July.

The Next Big Narly (quoting PDG Bill Pollard) Event which all Foundation Advocates, DRFC leads, and Club Foundation Chairs should get on their calendars is the Foundation Workshop on August 1 at the Colonial Heritage Club in Williamsburg.  More to follow.

Encourage Club Foundation Chairs to register and attend the District Training Assembly.

Foundation Advocates are smart people!  Here is the smartest things you can do in the next week or so —

1.  Encourage the Club Foundation Chairs (particularly incoming Club Foundation Chairs) to register and attend the District Training Assembly on April 25.  Why ….. because it will make your role as a Foundation Advocate easier and it will make the work of the Club Foundation Chairs much, much easier.  At the District Training Assembly incoming club leaders will get role specific instruction that will make the fulfillment of their duties for the incoming year so much clearer.

2.  Register yourself for the District Training Assembly.  Why … you are leading by example and giving yourself the opportunity to connect with your Club Foundation Chairs and others in one fell swoop.

How to register.  Log on to dacdb.com (dacdb stands for District And Club Database). Click on ‘Calendar’. Scroll down to District Training Assembly on April 25. Click on ‘Register Now’. Pull out that credit or debit card and do the deed.

3.  Encourage your Club Foundation Chairs to log onto 7600advocates.wordpress.com and ‘Follow.’  That way they and you (if you have ‘followed’) will receive this weekly message by email.  Talk about making your role easier.  The blog is open to anyone, but is most helpful to Foundation Advocates and Club Foundation Chairs.

Thank you for all you do  …
