Over 100 attended the Sensational Trio of August Rotary Seminars (#STARS):

It was a day filled with information, suggestions, innovative ideas and just a little bit of fun. We were all there to equip ourselves to “Be the Inspiration”. The Colonial Heritage Country Club in Williamsburg may never be the same. And Rotarians are innovative. Sometimes they switched seminars.  Gotta love these D7600 Rotarians

Public Image or How to share our Rotary stories:

Lead by the District Newsletter Editor and Public Image Chair, JoAnn Meaker, the 25 or so Rotarians in the Seminar, enjoyed intimate surroundings, printed materials, and demonstrations of the EZ Bulletin feature on dacdb.com.  LaShonda Delivuk, Public Image Chair from District 7570 also inspired the attendees with her presentation on the interplay between membership and public image.

Membership, It’s the only thing!

MembershipShelDouglas (2)The takeaway, oft repeated in the plenary sessions was “Membership, it’s the only thing.” 35+ Rotarians in the Membership seminar were led capably by District Membership Co-Chairs, Mike Jallo, and Shel Douglas.  LaShonda Delivuk also spoke in this session about the synergy between membership and public image.  No one will know our Rotary stories unless we have members to share their stories and unless our members share them.

The Rotary Foundation: How our good works are funded:

Approximately 42 Rotarians attended this session. Chuck Arnason, Rotary District Foundation Chair, and his team of Rudy Lee Garcia (Development),  Joy Kline (Annual Giving), Bill Billings (Endowment),  Appaiah Ballachanda (Paul Harris Society), Stan Wall (Polio Plus),  SuAnne Hardee Bryant (Grants), and Don Vaught (Grants Auditor). Just when one thinks there is nothing new to learn, Foundation-wise, there arise new requirements.  In this session, SuAnne focused on global grants, and our featured speaker Shel Douglas spoke on the more formal Community or Needs Assessments required of global grant applications.  The materials from The Rotary Foundation Seminar on d7600foundation.org on The Foundation Workshop Materials 2018 page.  There were no slides or handouts for the Paul Harris Society (PHS) as Appaiah is a walking cheerleader for the PHS.

The learning was not the only fun:

JoAnn Meaker designed the STARS meme and hashtag #STARS to help promote the workshops.  Dana Rieves, JoAnn Meaker, and Prince George Electric Cooperative provided the stellar door prizes.  David Rosenthal made all aware that it was also National Mustard Day. We decided to inspire every registrant to bring a new, unopened container of mustard to donate. Those who forgot often donated cash instead. Neva Lynde and her fellow James City County Satellite Club volunteered to carry the mustard to the FISH Food Bank.

The photos are part of the fun … thank Dianne Gordonn, Bill Billings, Jan Rowley, Chana Amaro and others who took many photos and shared them freely.

We are all now ready to “Be the Inspiration”.

Be there … Richmond … The Diamond!

Baseball 2018Yes, we were rained out in May.  The whole idea had been to have our Richmond area game earlier in the year to beat the heat of July.  Well, we did, but what had not been anticipated was the rain, not a polite, respectful rain, but a deluge of a rain. The Squirrels, rightfully, called the game and helped us reschedule for the June 14th date.

District Secretary Debbie Wall and Past Assistant Governor Stan Wall are recognized as the End Polio Now Rotary Night at the Diamond organizers. These two amazing Colonial Heights Rotarians have full corporate careers, but also make the time to be active regional and District Rotary activities.  This last weekend they were front and center at the Zone 33 Training in Greensboro, North Carolina. A real perk of that event was the opportunity to meet the Rotary International President Elect (RIPE) Barry Rassin and his lovely wife, Esther.

SaM & Debbie Wall

On June 14th they’ll put their red End Polio Now tee shirts back on and greet all comers in the name of Rotary.  Check in with your club Rotary Night representative to get updated on the plan to replace your previous tickets or buy tickets if you hadn’t already.

Tickets are $10, $2 of which goes to Rotary’s End Polio Now … but wait, there’s more. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching that $2 by a 2:1 ratio meaning that your ticket will actually result in $6 being donated to End Polio Now in the name of your very own club.  How cool is that?

Play Ball!

“a little rain must fall”, but not June 14th

Rescheduled END Polio Now RVA GAME – June 14

Yes, more than a little rain fell on May 16th as area Rotarians in District 7600 attempted to assemble at the Diamond to watch the annual End Polio Now Baseball game.  Even the Flying Squirrels decided to take their acorns home for the evening.  Many End Polio Warriors made it to the Diamond and others were caught in downpours or traffic tie-ups attempting to get there.

JoAnn & Norm Meaker (2)

Norm & JoAnn Meaker

Club baseball ticket organizers should contact Garrett Erwin at the Flying Squirrels at 804-359-3866 x327.  The same number of tickets previously purchased by the club will be reprinted with the June 14 date.

Additional tickets may be ordered as well. Remember that $2 of each ticket goes to End Polio Now and is matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation.  If you do the math that means that $6 for every ticket purchased goes to EPN.

And many thanks to the Rotarians who made the effort among whom were AG JoAnn and Norm Meaker above and below, AGE Shel Douglass, District End Polio Now Games Organizer Stan Wall, and District Polio Plus Chair Colleen Bonadonna.

More to follow soon.

A total shout out to the Foundation break out at the District Training Assembly

Thirty plus Rotarians attended the Foundation Breakout at the District Assembly.  They

Denya&Trident

Denya Hankerson (Prince George) & Triton

were Club Foundation Chairs, Presidents-Elect, generous donors, district leaders, rank and file club members, and, of course, Triton.  The input and questions ranged from the very newbie and valuable questions to the experienced, nuanced questions.  All of these questions and insight are important.  It is a learning experience for all … for the attendees as well as the presenters.

Thank you for your commitment and interest.

Another total shout out to Stan & Debbie Wall and to David Mansfield as we navigate to the End Polio Now Baseball Games

July 13 is the date for Rotary Night at the Diamond in Richmond and July 24 is the Norfolk Tides Game.  Both games begin at 7:05 pm and a portion of each rotary game ticket sold will be donated by the teams to End Polio Now.

The WallsRTEE7 have red ‘End Polio Now’ t-shirts for sale, $10 for most shirts and $12 for the fulsome 2x and 3x sizes.  A dollar from each shirt sale goes back to End Polio Now.

With this shirt, we can turn the stadium bleachers red and really ramp up the Rotary and End Polio Now profile.

And one more total shout out to District Governor Diane and District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair Chuck Arnason for approving Rotary Giving Tuesday on May 30, 2017.

On Tuesday, May 30, every online Rotary donation by a District 7600 Rotarian of $100 or prouddonormore to the Annual Fund will be matched dollar for dollar with district recognition points.  This is only on Tuesday. Not Monday. Not Wednesday.  Tuesday!

from the tractor seat of Chuck Arnason …

Two weeks in and it has already been an eventful Rotary Foundation year for me as the District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair … DRFC for short.

Colleen Bonnadonna and giant squirrel (2)The first of our two End Polio Now Baseball Games in Richmond on July 7 was a huge success.  Game Coordinator and now Assistant Governor Stan Wall and Debbie Wall, District Secretary, sold 1016 tickets, a record for the Richmond Squirrels Game.  Two dollars from each ticket was a donation to End Polio Now, the Squirrels threw in a bit more, and Debbie’s employer Sabra Dipping added another $2 for each of the 400 tickets that Debbie sold.  Add the matching contribution from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and our Richmond Squirrels game raised over $8000 for End Polio Now. At left District Polio Plus Coordinator, Colleen Bonadonna, under the watchful eye of that giant Squirrel, Nutzy.

At our District Awards Banquet in Williamsburg on July 9th our District’s Global ScholarChuck & Zoe, Zoe Romano,  Skyped in from Maine to share her plans for her two-year graduate program which will span three South American countries and will include academic semesters and semesters of volunteer teaching in under-served schools.  She especially praised Delmar Dayton of the South Richmond Club for his patience and persistence in the two years it took to steward her acceptance as a global scholar.

Bebo and RipTideSo two weeks in and there is another fantastic  End Polio Now Baseball Game in Norfolk on July 27th being organized by David Mansfield.  There is still time to get tickets for this Triple-A game. Join in with hundreds of area Rotarians doing their bit to eradicate Polio and have a heck of a lot of fun. Rip Tide will be so disappointed if you don’t show.  Check the 2016 Polio Plus Tides Baseball  flyer for more details.

Finally, capping off the first full month as the DRFC we have the August 6th Foundation and Membership Workshop in Williamsburg. The new District Rotary Foundation Team will be front and center in explaining the tweaks to Foundation Giving and Grants. I hope you can make it.  There is an award winning breakfast, door prizes, and tons, just tons, of great information on the Rotary Foundation.  Go on dacdb.com calendar and register, please.  Clothing is not optional, but tropical comfortable is recommended. Click 2016 Workshop Flyer for more information.

A new Rotary year beckons for Foundation Advocates

In less than a month the class of 2015 -2016 Foundation Advocates will complete their duties in that role. With the advent of the 2016-2017 year there will be a new Foundation Advocate structure and a newly defined role for Advocates  as Past District Governor Chuck Arnason assumes the role as the District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.  There will be more published in the near future about the newly designed Foundation Advocate program.  For now it is provident to recognize the 2015-16 Foundation Advocates and thank them for a job well done.

Foundation Advocates 2015-16

Under the leadership of Bruce Settle, Cindy Pecht, and Carol Woodward, the Advocates Warren Rice, J. Kevin Kelly, Michael Binns, Delmar Dayton, Carl Duffey, Janice Rowley, Stan cropped-a-gift-to-the-world.jpgWall, Dan Jones, Cynthia Gregg, Philip Ford, Dennis Wool, Bob Harper, Louis Tayon, James P. O’Brien, Suzanne Luna, Paul L. Strong, and Heather Martin each handled their roles in a different way with varying levels of intensity, but each carried a strong commitment to The Rotary Foundation in their DNA.Their involvement helped us ‘Bee’ a Gift to the World.

2015-16-advocates

During their tenure they

  • communicated with their clubs and club Rotary Foundation chairs
  • contributed to the setting of District 7600 giving records
  • assisted clubs in applying for district and global grants
  • suggested the founding of this weekly Foundation blog (recurring article)
  • recommended the founding of the District Rotary Foundation Committee facebook page
  • contributed regular articles to Features, the monthly District Foundation Newsletter

So, thank you to the Foundation Advocates, class of 2015 -16 for your service and commitment.

Club Foundation Chairs, Colonial Heights Rotary, DGE Diane Hagemann, Hopewell Rotary, Memorandum of Understanding, PDG Chuck Arnason, Presidents-Elect, Prince George Rotary, Stan Wall, Steve Benham

It’s never to early to start planning:

District Governor-Elect Diane Hagemann and Past District Governor Chuck Arnason connected in September at the Rotary Club of Prince George County for a club program.  Afterwards they took the opportunity to find a quiet corner to confer with each other on matters relating to the 2016 -2o17 Rotary year.  What wasn’t known to most Rotarians at the time was that PDG Chuck was the incoming District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.

Area 7 Foundation Advocate, Stan Wall (c)

Recently, Foundation Advocate for Area 7, Stan Wall (Colonial Heights Club), after coordinating with Area Governor Sam Parham (Petersburg Breakfast Rotary), connected with his clubs’ Club Foundation Chairs and Presidents-Elect to once again brief them on and answer questions about the Memorandum of Understanding and other topics the PEs would be studying at the Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS).

These two vignettes demonstrate that sometimes face to face meetings with individuals or small groups can help promote the understanding of roles and contribute to the sharing of information as challenges arise.

Presidents-Elect and Club Foundation Chairs, whether they are new to the roles or are repeating those roles (as often happens in smaller clubs), may feel overwhelmed at times by what is expected and when.   Whatever our roles in our clubs or the district, we all want to do a good job and help others shine in their roles.  Yes, this is a bit of a pep ‘talk’, but worthy of doing.  We are Rotarians  who are ‘Gifts To The World’ by ‘Serving Humanity.’

Announcement:

This weekly Foundation Blog will publish on Tuesdays beginning in March 2016.  Watch for other changes as we approach the 2016 -2017 year.

Advocate Roles and Responsibilities, Area Governors, Club Foundation Chairs, District Training Assembly, Foundation Advocates, Foundation Goals, Heather Martin, J. Kevin Kelly, Stan Wall

Encourage Club Foundation Chairs to register and attend the District Training Assembly.

Foundation Advocates are smart people!  Here is the smartest things you can do in the next week or so —

1.  Encourage the Club Foundation Chairs (particularly incoming Club Foundation Chairs) to register and attend the District Training Assembly on April 25.  Why ….. because it will make your role as a Foundation Advocate easier and it will make the work of the Club Foundation Chairs much, much easier.  At the District Training Assembly incoming club leaders will get role specific instruction that will make the fulfillment of their duties for the incoming year so much clearer.

2.  Register yourself for the District Training Assembly.  Why … you are leading by example and giving yourself the opportunity to connect with your Club Foundation Chairs and others in one fell swoop.

How to register.  Log on to dacdb.com (dacdb stands for District And Club Database). Click on ‘Calendar’. Scroll down to District Training Assembly on April 25. Click on ‘Register Now’. Pull out that credit or debit card and do the deed.

3.  Encourage your Club Foundation Chairs to log onto 7600advocates.wordpress.com and ‘Follow.’  That way they and you (if you have ‘followed’) will receive this weekly message by email.  Talk about making your role easier.  The blog is open to anyone, but is most helpful to Foundation Advocates and Club Foundation Chairs.

Thank you for all you do  …
