Clean water, toilets, & schools, oh my …

Rotary District 7600,  clubs in the district, as well as districts and clubs throughout the US and in Ghana, have committed funds and volunteers to a series of water and sanitation global grant projects in Ghana.

These grants, spearheaded by Walter Hughes of District 7570 and greatly aided by grant writer, Shel Douglas, Past President of the Prince George Club and Assistant Governor of Area 6, will also include basic school buildings complete with libraries filled with books.  There will be volunteer work trips, one of which is coming up in late January and three of the volunteers on that trip will be Walter, Shel, and Past District Governor Stephen Beer.

Walter visited the Rotary Club of Prince George County on December 12 and provided the club with information about the water & hygiene grants in particular, but also about the Rotary Water & Hygiene Area of Focus (or Cause, if you will).  On hand were PDG Stephen, PDG & current District Rotary Foundation Chair, Chuck Arnason, District Polio Plus Chair, Colleen Bonadonna, and non-Rotarian visitors and guests interested in health, education, clean water, and sanitation.

The presentation is provided here as a video and runs about 20 minutes. Watch it if you can, but if not, know that the gist of Walter’s message is that access to sustainable potable water, hygienic sanitation, education, and maintenance training,  not only fights disease but also provides economic development opportunities for isolated areas. These opportunities build the ability of communities to continue improving their own facilities, resources, and futures.

District Rotary Foundation Chair, Chuck Arnason, and Rotary International Director-Elect (RIDE), David Stovall, assisted Past District Governor Diane Hagemann to celebrate the year of Foundation giving during her tenure as District Governor.

The evening of November 9th in Williamsburg was actually two events.  The Friends of the Foundation Reception honoring Major Donors, Bequest Society Members, and Paul Harris Society members, was sponsored this year by District Governor John Padgett and Maguire Woods, LLC.  DG John is the Managing Partner of the Norfolk Office of Maguire Woods.   During the Reception, three new Major Donors were recognized, by Rotary International Director-Elect (RIDE), David Stovall,  DG John and Lee Ann Padgett, Bill and Lois Billings, and Colleen Bonadonna & Daniel Hockenberger.  Kyle Davis, on guitar, provided music.

The second event, the Foundation Awards Banquet, is the culmination of the two-event evening.  It is at the banquet that the highest giving clubs, recipients of District Services Awards, and the recipients of the three highest Foundation Awards are recognized. The Banquet was accompanied by a cash bar reception, wicked baked brie,  and music on the keyboard by Jeff Paul. RIDE David Stoval did double duty, being both our keynote speaker and the chief presenter of the awards. Bill Billings was the event photographer.

Alexandria Ritchie of the James River Club received the Outstanding Alumni Award.  She was an Interact member and is currently a member of the John Tyler Rotaract Club and the James River club, as well.  She is an undergraduate biomedical student.

 

DavidBillHennSukiChuckThe recipient of the James Russell Pierce Foundation Leadership Award was William “Bill” Henn of the Rotary Club of Petersburg Breakfast. Bill received the award from Suki Pierce (Rotary Club of Virginia Peninsula), the widow of Jim Pierce.  This award is conferred on Club Rotary Foundation Chair who served his or her club and The Rotary Foundation with distinction.

The final award, the Citation for Meritorious Service, is unique in that it can be only awarded once each Rotary year by a district and the recipient may receive the award only once.  The Award recognizes extraordinary service to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and is not awarded for monetary contributions.  The recipient this year was Ken Hodge of the Newport News Club honoring his service and accomplishments for three years as the Development Chair for the District Rotary Foundation Committee.

Foundation Advocates – job well done

A new Rotary year beckons for Foundation Advocates

In less than a month the class of 2015 -2016 Foundation Advocates will complete their duties in that role. With the advent of the 2016-2017 year there will be a new Foundation Advocate structure and a newly defined role for Advocates  as Past District Governor Chuck Arnason assumes the role as the District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.  There will be more published in the near future about the newly designed Foundation Advocate program.  For now it is provident to recognize the 2015-16 Foundation Advocates and thank them for a job well done.

Under the leadership of Bruce Settle, Cindy Pecht, and Carol Woodward, the Advocates Warren Rice, J. Kevin Kelly, Michael Binns, Delmar Dayton, Carl Duffey, Janice Rowley, Stan cropped-a-gift-to-the-world.jpgWall, Dan Jones, Cynthia Gregg, Philip Ford, Dennis Wool, Bob Harper, Louis Tayon, James P. O’Brien, Suzanne Luna, Paul L. Strong, and Heather Martin each handled their roles in a different way with varying levels of intensity, but each carried a strong commitment to The Rotary Foundation in their DNA.Their involvement helped us ‘Bee’ a Gift to the World.

It’s never to early to start planning:

District Governor-Elect Diane Hagemann and Past District Governor Chuck Arnason connected in September at the Rotary Club of Prince George County for a club program.  Afterwards they took the opportunity to find a quiet corner to confer with each other on matters relating to the 2016 -2o17 Rotary year.  What wasn’t known to most Rotarians at the time was that PDG Chuck was the incoming District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.

Recently, Foundation Advocate for Area 7, Stan Wall (Colonial Heights Club), after coordinating with Area Governor Sam Parham (Petersburg Breakfast Rotary), connected with his clubs’ Club Foundation Chairs and Presidents-Elect to once again brief them on and answer questions about the Memorandum of Understanding and other topics the PEs would be studying at the Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS).

These two vignettes demonstrate that sometimes face to face meetings with individuals or small groups can help promote the understanding of roles and contribute to the sharing of information as challenges arise.

Presidents-Elect and Club Foundation Chairs, whether they are new to the roles or are repeating those roles (as often happens in smaller clubs), may feel overwhelmed at times by what is expected and when.   Whatever our roles in our clubs or the district, we all want to do a good job and help others shine in their roles.  Yes, this is a bit of a pep ‘talk’, but worthy of doing.  We are Rotarians  who are ‘Gifts To The World’ by ‘Serving Humanity.’

Visit the Foundation Grants page on rotary7600.org and find the 2016 – 17 MOU and other updated grants documents. PEs will receive instructions on the MOUs at PETS.  Remember that Distict Grant Applications are due by May 15.

2016 Foundation/Membership Workshop, Colonial Heritage Club (Williamsburg) August 6:

The incoming District Membership Chair Mike Jallo and incoming District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair (DRFCC) Chuck Arnason are in the early stages of planning as we read this.  Why should Club Foundation Chairs, Grant Project Chairs, and Membership Chairs attend?

  • annual training focused on just Membership, Foundation Giving, & GrantsAdvocate Heather & DGN John
  • takes only a morning — shopping, sightseeing, and lunch can follow with the family
  • minimum of pomp and circumstance
  • chance to show off those tropical plaid shorts, skorts, and disreputable hats

Registration will be on the dacdb.com district calendar soon.  The Colonial Heritage Country Club has wifi, an informal grill & bar for lunch afterwards, if you choose, and is virtually across from the Williamsburg Pottery.  Make the entire day a family outing.  You will be out of the Workshop around Noon.  Watch this space for when Registration opens.

‘Bee’lieve that you can ‘Be A Gift to the World’

Beelieving is seeing.  At a recent meeting of the Prince George Rotary, Past Rotary International Director, Ken Morgan, conveyed a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition

on a personal friend, Prince George Board of Supervisor’s Chair, William (“Bill”) A. Robertson.  Ken, a member of the Rotary Club of Chapel Hill, had driven from North Carolina to convey Paul Harris Fellow status on his childhood friend and non-Rotarian, Bill. The club’s President-Elect, Percy Ashcraft, whose day job is being the Prince George County Administrator, had conspired  with club President and Director of Social Services, Shel Douglas, to convince Bill to attend the meeting.  To make the presentation even sweeter Past District Governor Chuck Arnason drove in from the Blacksburg Rotary to witness the ceremony.

Later Club Secretary, Dana Rieves, was awarded her Paul Harris Fellow because a fellow member transferred recognition points to Dana to recognize  her significant donations  to The Rotary Foundation as a new member and her donation of time and talent to the club in general.  This Paul Harris Fellow recognition was a surprise as well.

Promoting The Rotary Foundation is worthy at all meetings but consider adding some excitement and surprise around giving to The Rotary Foundation and recognizing those who do contribute time, talent, and dollars.  It just may encourage other members to ‘Be a Gift to the World.”
