Time of celebration in District 7600!

Having broken three giving records … per capita, annual fund, and total giving, the district is up for a celebration next Thursday night on November 9th at the Colonial Heritage Golf Club at our annual Foundation Awards Banquet.  We really hope you are among the Rotarians planning of sharing in the celebration.

Waging peace … an area of focus.

A number of District 7600 Rotarians joined Rotarians from our neighboring District 7610, at a Peace Conference in Fredericksburg last week.  Among the speakers was Pat Schafer whom many of us met and learned from at the District Conference in September.  Pat shared, again, the message about building structural environments for peace and conflict resolution.  She was joined by some remarkable Rotary Peace Scholars, who though young, were already well educated, well traveled, and already committed to building a more peaceful world in their own realms of endeavor.

Matt Ford is an analyst with the World Bank and is learning how income disparity, low national Gross National Product, and climate change contribute to conflict.  Reem Ghunaim is the Executive Director of the Rotarian Action Group for Peace based in Portland Oregon.  Reem is originally from Palestine and Matt is from Australia and both are Peace Scholars from the Duke-UNC Peace Center.

The conference was inspiring, informative, and challenging.  Building peace is hard work.  You can learn more about the roles Rotarians can play in waging peace by joining the Rotary Action Group for Peace at www.rotarianactiongroupforpeace.org

Can you find D7600 District Governor, Ronnie Chantker?

Colonial Heritage Williamsburg, Foundation Awards Banquet, November 9, Register by November 2, RIDE David Stovall, Wine

no lie … it is time to register for the District Foundation Awards Banquet!

Change of plans:

In last week’s blog, we promised to feature one or more of the district economic & community development grants and, in due course, we will do that, but …

We are only one week away from the registration deadline (November 2)  for the District Foundation Banquet at which stellar Foundation giving clubs and outstanding Foundation leaders will be recognized.  Thirty plus clubs will be receiving banner awards and a number of individuals will receive praise for their dedication to The Rotary Foundation.

The dinner is the World Famous Americana Buffet dinner with a large variety of food to satisfy individual tastes. There is also the opportunity, for those who wish to be more civilized, to purchase wine, by the glass or by the bottle, for their tables.  We need not mention the cash bar and appetizers prior to the dinner.

Attire is business formal, but you know Rotarians.  This is not a stuffy event, though.  Register your spouse while you are at it and, voila, instant date night at the Colonial Heritage Golf Club in Williamsburg. And/or register one of your younger or newer club members as your guest, so they can get a chance to see how friendly, warm, and encouraging District activities can be.

David StovallThe keynote speaker, is David Stovall, the Rotary International Director-Elect from Zone 34.  David is an aviator, long-time Rotarian, and avid funster. You will enjoy meeting him as he prepares to begin his term as a Rotary International Director in 2018. Hope he wears that hat.

All of you know the drill to register.  Pull out the credit or debit card.  Go to the dacdb.com calendar.  Scroll down to the date, November 9, and register for the Banquet by November 2nd, please.  Don’t like doing it that way, call the District Executive Secretary, Maryann Tetreault, before 12:30 a.m. any weekday morning and she will help you out.

Hope to see everyone there.  We have a lot to “crow” about.

Peace & Quiet … for a bit

dacdb.com Calendar, DAF, Foundation Awards Banquet, Interact-Rotaract Conference, November 9, October 28, Peace Conference D7610, Williamsburg

Speaking of Peace …

One of the speakers at District Conference was a Peace Fellow, Patricia Schafer.  She spoke eloquently of how conflict resolution and leadership skills being learned at an early age can contribute exponentially to the cause of peace.  Many of our 7600 Rotarians have attended the annual peace conference at the UNC-Duke Peace Center held each spring.  We are fortunate that District 7610, directly to our North, has an active Peace and Peacebuilders initiative ongoing in its District.  Their annual Fall Peace Conference will be held on October 28 in Fredericksburg.  One of Patricia’s special interests is the NewGen Peacebuilders initiative wherein young folk ages 14 to 24 receive training in conflict resolution and solutions building.

Unfortunately, the 28th is also the date of our District’s Interact-Rotaract Training Conference.  This is a very hard choice for many, but please see what you can do to attend or support either the Peace Conference or the Interact – Rotaract Training Conference.  Every club with either an Interact or Rotaract Club should plan on helping its students participate.  If not engaged in the Interact or Rotaract program in your club, perhaps you would consider attending the Peace Conference.

Registration for both conferences is available on our District 7600 dacdb.com calendar.

Speaking of Quiet …

Most of us survived the Spirit of 7600 District Conference in good order.  Though there were lots of learning opportunities, there was also a lot of fun going on.  Some wee drinks of a special draft beer, or a few sips or two of wine were had, and then there was that 70s party.  Oh, my.  Many of us need to rest up and get ready for the Foundation Awards Banquet on November 9, 2017.  We had a banner year in the 2016-2017 Rotary year, so we expect a lot of interest in attending the Award Banquet at the Colonial Heritage Golf Club in Williamsburg on November 9th.  Registration on the dacdb.com calendar for that event will be available during the week of October 2, but get November 9th penciled into your and your spouse’s calendar now.

District Conference … heading into a great Rotary year!

DGE John Padgett and Al Rossendaal2District 7600 is riding high this year!  We have a committed leadership team lead by District Governor John Padgett, who is a terrific guy, even if a bit sartorially adventurous. Past District Governor and District Rotary Foundation Chair, Chuck Arnason, is in a celebration mode with three Rotary Foundation giving records having been broken in 2016-17 under his and Past District Governor Diane Hagemann’s leadership.

How can you be part of the celebration?

District Conference: Attend the District Conference September 22-24 in Norfolk.  Can’t Beegeesattend the entire conference? There is a one-day ticket registration available. Prefer social activities well, there is a commemorative special draft beer, ‘Spirit of 7600’, a wine tasting, a river cruise, and just lots of fun at the House of Friendship which will showcase club activities, projects, and fundraisers. You can register now at dacdb.com calendar.  Don’t wait … ‘Just Do It!’

Foundation Awards Banquet: Most of you know about this event from having attended before.  It is one of our 7600’s favorite dining events.  This year on November 9,  in Williamsburg,  a few things are being ramped up, so be prepared for an evening that is a tad shorter and for some other surprises to make it a memorable evening.  Along with clubs receiving awards for outstanding giving, the district will also be awarding the Outstanding Alumni Award, and the James Pierce Foundation Leadership Award. Registration and further details will be available beginning on September 25, you got it, on dacdb.com calendar.
