Rotary partners with Habitat for Humanity:

habitat-for-humanity-logoRotary has a number of established partner relationships.  On October 2, 2017, Rotary announced its partnership with Habitat for Humanity. In the announcement, Rotary shared a figure provided by the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements;  over one billion people worldwide reside in substandard housing.

This partnership adds to the goal of Rotary to do good works in the world by partnering with an organization with a stellar reputation for how it uses donations, volunteer sweat equity, and construction expertise to provide humane housing for people.   “The partnership will facilitate collaboration between local Rotary clubs and local Habitat for Humanity organizations, enabling Habitat to extend their volunteer pool by tapping into Rotary’s 1.2 million members in 200 countries and regions.”

Not all of Rotary’s good works necessarily fit into district or grant criteria, but an interesting challenge will be how to fit our good works into either district or global grant criteria … or how to adapt grant criteria to facilitate a home construction project. This may not be as daunting as we might think as Rotarians can provide labor, expertise, and club donations rather than seek grant funding for projects.

Are you a current leader … president, club foundation chair, district grant project leader, a committee chair?

Presidents should be registered or should be registering for the Presidential Retreat to be held on this Saturday, January 7 in Richmond.

Tasks for current club leaders to be working on or delegating in the next 90 days include

  • encouraging member engagement with the Rotary Foundation by giving early
  • assigning appropriate club leaders to be working on District Club Award nominations
  • encouraging your district grant project leaders to adhere to grant reporting requirements

Are you an incoming President (current President-Elect), incoming Rotary Foundation Chair, or incoming grant application lead?

Incoming Presidents (Presidents-Elect) should be registered or planning on registering for PrePETS also held in Richmond this weekend concurrently with the Presidential Retreat. Here you will be briefed

  • about  Chesapeake PETS (Presidents-Elect Training Seminar) required for Presidents-Elects on March 2-5, in Chantilly, Virginia.  You should register now
  • district administrative changes to take place in the 2017-18 Rotary Year
  • intro to some of the 2017-18 district and global grant application requirements
  • intro (hands on) to ‘My Rotary’ and District and Club Database (dacdb)

Among your 90 day tasks are

  • confirming that all incoming elected club officers, assigned positions, and committee chairs are entered into My Rotary and into dacdb.com as appropriate (this cannot be done soon enough 🙂
  • setting club goals with your incoming board and confirming that the goals have been entered  into ‘My Rotary’
  • preparing to help your team apply for a district or global grant

If you can accomplish these tasks appropriate to your role then the rest is easy-peasy.

Grants, grants, grants … want fries with that?

Actually, there were home fries served with the full English breakfast at the Grant Management Seminar (GMS) on Saturday, March 19 at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse in Williamsburg. OK, it wasn’t a full English … there were no beans, but everything expected in a Southern breakfast was to be had.  The food was great, the room was full, and the presenters were well prepared.

Wayne Boggs and Grant CosingThe GMS met all of the requirements for a club in attendance to be eligible to apply for or participate in a global grant.  In our district only global grants require attendance at a GMS, but the application process, grant criteria, and reporting requirements are very similar for a district grant. The information imparted at the GMS  prepared the clubs in attendance for the application, execution, reporting, and close out of either type of grant.

If your club was not represented, there will be two more opportunities to learn what you need to learn to pursue a district or global grant.  On April 2 and on May 7  there will be additional GMS presentations.  Both will be at the Old Dominion University Peninsula Center, Suite 2200,  600 Butler Farm Road in Hampton 22666 and both will also be available as webinars.  The April GMS will focus on district grants.  The program will include demonstrating the district grant module and describing how to develop a district grant.  The May GMS will focus on global grants. Both are conveniently scheduled prior to the district grant application deadline of May 16.

The registrations for these seminars will be available very, very soon so watch dacdb.com and have your club representatives register soonest for one or both of these events.   More information may be obtained from DRFCC Jim Probsdorfer or from District Grants Chair SuAnne Bryant.
