Rotary & Veterans:

International Fellowship of Military Veterans:

Did you know there is an International Fellowship of Rotarian Military Veterans?  It is now an official Rotary Fellowship.  One may join even if not a veteran, but simply one who is supportive of those in service.  The annual cost is $10 and a life membership is $100.  For more information you may visit the Rotarian Veterans site or their facebook page.

Wreaths Across America:

This nonprofit is not Rotary affiliated but our District Newsletter Editor, JoAnn Meaker, is active in this organization which urges involvement in recognizing the sacrifices of our military dead, by remembering those who lie beneath the stones. Learn more about how you can be involved by visiting Wreaths Across America.

JoAnn is a published author and historian and has raised awareness of this grassroots effort to honor the country’s fallen.

We hope everyone’s Memorial Day Weekend has been enjoyable, memorable, and respectful.  Now this writer is going to go hug her favorite veteran.

As we boat, cookout, visit the mall, catch a soccer game  … let’s remember that our way of life has been and is being secured by men and women in all branches of the military and in the government agencies which support them.  Many of these personnel will be far away from the usual celebrations of the Memorial Day weekend such as the second detachment of the 111th Quartermaster Company  which left for a six month deployment on May 20th.

One of Rotary’s six areas of service, Promoting Peace, is devoted to learning about and understanding challenges faced by people around the world.  No country is perfect but by sharing our good will and seeking to understand others, maybe someday we can help eradicate conflict just as we are eradicating polio.

As Memorial Day approaches let’s give some thought to those in uniform and their support agencies. Let’s find some ways to express our gratitude for their service and remember those no longer with us.

Have a safe, peaceful Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day … a day to remember absent heroes and heroes among us

Remember and Recognize

My retired U.S. Army husband and I have spent part of this Memorial Day weekend engaging in some industrial napping, grilling, yard work, watching The Military Channel, and catching a few unseen episodes of Blue Bloods.  Yes, rather prosaic, I know.

I have not forgotten that we have important Rotary Foundation duties … meeting club giving goals, setting and inputting club giving goals for the next Rotary year, and gearing up for our annual Polio Plus Baseball games.  We will return to those duties on Tuesday.

Today I remember a father and father-in-law and their wives now gone from us who served their country for the duration, however long it might have been during World War II. I cherish the presence of my veteran husband who served in stormy times. These are my personal connections to military service and the risks it can bring.

Often among the unrecognized are the First Responders – law enforcement officers, EMTs, and firefighters who at a moment’s notice can be in harm’s way.  Many have perished in the course of their duties and others face challenging and dangerous situations on a daily basis.

There are still American service members performing their duties on posts and bases around the world. First responders are still going out on emergency calls even on a day treated by most as the first great picnic day of the summer.

So, today, I reflect on those absent and those among us to whom we owe so much.
