A gift that will last for years

This is a super time of year to highlight the good that The Rotary Foundation and Rotarians do.  Last week we featured a thank you letter from a citizen of Central Virginia expressing appreciation to the Rotary Clubs of Petersburg for their fundraising and club grant to the YMCA.

Today we feature a project, funded in part by a Rotary 7600 District Grant to the Rotary Club of Fluvanna.  Why  this feature?  In poking around the grants module in dacdb.com we found that Fluvanna is the first and only club to have submitted its district grant Final Report in the Grants Module complete with pictures.

The STEAM Lab Maker Space has nothing to do with a sauna in a spa.  STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.  Fluvanna Central Elementary School identified the need for a program to help elementary school students start on the path towards developing more STEAM competencies.  The District Grant applied for by the Rotary Club of Fluvanna ensures that the school has a Maker Space (Room 209) and the tools to provide such a program for the 250 students at Central.  The program will focus on 1st and 2nd graders enrolled now and in years to come.  “The ability to teach higher level critical thinking and problem-solving skills is essential for helping prepare students for entry into not just secondary and post-secondary educational settings, but also to better prepare them to integrate into the future workforce.” About a third of the club’s members were engaged hands-on in unpacking and setting up equipment and the grant partner organization and recipient ordered and received the needed equipment and supplies.

Congratulations to the Fluvanna Club on this innovate project and for not waiting for the deadline to submit your Final Report.
